The History of PRINCE2®: A Project Management Journey
PRINCE2® boasts a rich history dating back to 1975 when it was known as PROMPT II (Project Resource Organisation Management Planning Techniques). Developed by Simpact Systems Ltd, PROMPT II was later adopted by the UK Government’s Central Computer and Telecommunications Agency (CCTA) in 1989. Initially named PRINCE (an acronym for PROMPT II IN the CCTA Environment), it served as an IT project management standard. However, its rigidity limited its use for smaller projects.
The turning point came in 1996. Following extensive consultations with project management experts and 150 European organizations, PRINCE2® emerged as a refined and versatile framework. In 2009, a major revision established the seven core PRINCE2® principles. Ownership then transferred from HM Cabinet Office to AXELOS Ltd in 2013.
The latest update to PRINCE2® came in September 2023 with the release of PRINCE2® 7th Edition. Responding to feedback from PRINCE2® practitioners, AXELOS released this update to further enhance the framework’s relevance in today’s dynamic business environment. The update incorporates modern tools, practices, and technologies to empower project managers across various industries.
The core principles, processes, and themes of PRINCE2® remain strong, but the 2023 update emphasizes the connection between these elements and their application in real-world scenarios. Changes were also made to the exam structure and teaching methods for improved clarity.
Why was PRINCE2® Developed?
PRINCE2® was originally conceived to assist the public sector, particularly the central government, in managing projects effectively. It aimed to ensure projects were completed within budget, time, and scope while maintaining quality.
When was PRINCE2® Established?
The PROMPT II methodology evolved into PRINCE in 1989. However, due to its limitations, PRINCE2® was established in 1996 as a more adaptable framework suitable for diverse industries.
